Message validation is the automated checking of EDI, XML, or other structured messages for completeness, format compliance, and content accuracy. An ORDERS message, for example, is verified to confirm all mandatory fields are populated, dates conform to the required format, article numbers exist in the system, and quantities are plausible. Validation typically runs at multiple checkpoints: on the sender side before transmission, on the receiver side upon receipt, and potentially again within the core system. Only messages that pass all validation rules proceed to processing – failed messages are rejected and trigger an error report or exception workflow. Unlike schema validation, which checks structure alone, message validation can also enforce business rules such as permissible value ranges or cross-reference checks.
