Definition & Explanation

During transport in the supply chain, a continuous stream of data flows from sensors monitoring temperature, humidity, shocks, and position. Traditionally, this data must be transmitted to a central platform. In meshed IoT cargo data networks, the sensors are instead connected to one another: each sensor acts simultaneously as a data collector and relay for other sensors. This enables distributed storage and intelligent local processing – not all raw data needs immediate upload. The result is a more robust system (if one sensor fails, the next relays its data), lower latency, and reduced transmission costs.
