The overarching goal is a step-by-step reduction in the greenhouse gas intensity of sea transport, which accounts for a substantial share of global freight movement. Technical approaches include more efficient propulsion, wind-assisted systems, and alternative fuels such as LNG, methanol, and, in the longer term, green ammonia or hydrogen; operational levers include slow steaming and optimised port call management. Binding targets come chiefly from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which has set decarbonisation milestones for the industry, and from the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), which has been progressively extended to cover shipping from 2024.
