Manufacturers and distributors deploy Make-to-Stock (MTS) when they produce goods against demand forecasts and hold them as finished inventory ready for immediate dispatch. Incoming orders are fulfilled directly from stock, enabling short lead times and firm delivery commitments. The structural weakness is forecast dependency: overestimated demand creates excess inventory—raising carrying costs and obsolescence risk—while underestimated demand causes stockouts and lost revenue. MTS suits standard, high-volume products with stable and predictable demand, as seen in consumer goods, food, and pharmaceuticals. It stands in contrast to Make-to-Order (MTO), where production follows confirmed orders, eliminating inventory risk at the cost of longer lead times.
