Definition & Explanation
LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) is a mixture of propane and butane obtained from oil and gas production and from refineries; it liquefies under moderate pressure or mild cooling. It is used as a heating and motor fuel and as a petrochemical feedstock. At sea, LPG is carried in specialised gas carriers whose construction and operation are governed by the IMO IGC Code; by road and rail it is classified as dangerous goods under ADR and RID respectively. Not to be confused with LNG, natural gas liquefied by deep cooling (around −162 °C), which consists mainly of methane and requires different ships and terminals.
