When a vessel enters port or transits an Emission Control Area (ECA), it must demonstrate that its bunker fuel meets the sulfur limits under MARPOL Annex VI: a global cap of 0.50 % m/m and a stricter limit of 0.10 % m/m within designated ECAs such as the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and Mediterranean Sea.
