Definition & Explanation
Loose cargo palletization standards are guidelines for safely arranging and securing unpackaged or partially packaged items—pipes, profiles, cut sheet metal, coils, or components—on wooden or plastic pallets. They define permissible stacking configurations, maximum overhang, load distribution across the pallet surface, and required fastening methods such as strapping, stretch film, edge protectors, and netting. The objective is to prevent shifting, tipping, and damage during storage, handling, and transport. Key references include EN 13382 for flat pallets and the CTU Code issued jointly by IMO, ILO, and UNECE. Unlike standards for consumer goods with outer packaging, loose cargo rules must compensate for the absence of protective wrapping through stricter edge protection requirements and higher tie-down forces.
