Safe and efficient ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of cryogenic liquefied gases such as LNG or LPG depends on specialized pumps combining precise flow control with continuous pressure stability. Centrifugal or positive displacement pumps are selected according to operational requirements and are permanently installed aboard liquefied gas carriers or floating storage units (FSU/FSRU). Because cryogenic media are handled at extreme subzero temperatures, uninterrupted thermal insulation and active pressure management are essential to minimize boil-off losses. STS operations typically take place at sea or at anchorage and are governed by specific IMO guidelines and classification society requirements. Unlike pumps at shore terminals, these units must also withstand the dynamic mechanical stresses caused by vessel motion in open water.
