Know Your Business Customer, KYBC for short, refers to the obligation of online marketplaces to identify their commercial traders before activation and to verify the information provided. In the EU the principle is anchored in Article 30 of the Digital Services Act (Regulation (EU) 2022/2065, "traceability of traders"): platforms must collect the trader's name, address, registration number, payment account and self-certification, make best efforts to verify them, and retain the data for six months after the contract ends; traders who fail to supply the data must be suspended. The aim is to push anonymous sellers of counterfeits and unsafe products out of e-commerce — fighting counterfeiting at the source. For importers and freight forwarders KYBC improves traceability: behind every listing there must be an identifiable trader, which can be decisive in customs matters and product liability. Not to be confused with Know Your Customer (KYC), the identification duty in the financial sector for anti-money-laundering purposes.
