The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is Kenya's statutory body responsible for collecting taxes and administering customs on behalf of the government. Its mandate covers import duties, value added tax, excise duties, and border enforcement, making it the central counterpart for every cross-border shipment entering or leaving Kenya. Importers, exporters, and licensed customs agents interact with the KRA throughout the clearance process—from lodging declarations and cargo valuation under the Harmonized System to duty payment and physical inspections. The KRA operates the Integrated Customs Management System (iCMS) for electronic filing and risk-based cargo assessment. Unlike a standalone customs agency, the KRA combines customs and domestic tax administration, giving it authority over both trade-related and internal revenue matters.
