Environmental and sustainability managers rely on the ISO 14000 series to systematically identify, control and reduce the environmental impacts of their operations. The central standard, ISO 14001, sets requirements for an environmental management system (EMS); ISO 14004 provides accompanying implementation guidance. In transport and logistics, ISO 14001 certification typically targets fleet emissions, waste reduction and fuel efficiency. For freight forwarders and carriers, the certificate also signals environmental accountability to shippers and supply chain partners who impose sustainability criteria on their service providers. Not to be confused with ISO 9001, which governs general quality management.
