Definition & Explanation
When loading, transhipping, or discharging bulk commodities such as grain, ores, coal, or liquid chemicals, specialist inspection services provide independent documentation of quantity, quality, and transport conditions. Certified inspectors determine quantity through weighing, flow measurement, or calibrated sampling, and assess quality against parameters such as moisture content, contamination levels, and particle size. In commodities trading, these inspections are frequently a contractual or letter-of-credit requirement: without the independent inspector's report, neither cargo release nor payment authorisation will follow. Unlike general cargo inspection, bulk cargo demands specific representative sampling methods, since a full visual examination of the entire consignment is not technically feasible.
