An inland terminal is a landside transhipment facility away from the coast where containers and other loading units transfer between rail, truck and sometimes inland waterway. It consolidates consignments from the surrounding region, provides storage and depot services and often handles customs formalities, acting as a seaport's forward arm in the hinterland. For shippers, proximity to an inland terminal determines whether a consignment can economically be moved by rail or whether a long road pre-carriage leg remains necessary. In India such facilities are commonly called Inland Container Depots (ICD).
