Unlike dutiable inventory, an in-bond shipment is not immediately assessed with import duties. Instead, it moves under customs supervision and a posted bond through a customs territory until reaching its designated customs office. There, customs and the consignee decide on the next procedure—standard clearance, export, destruction, or further transit. The advantage is working-capital relief: duty payment defers until actual need, not at border crossing. This regime is common in bilateral trade and through-transit operations.
