Import tax relief is the partial reduction of import duties or import VAT based on a legal or treaty provision—such as a free trade agreement, a tariff rate quota, or a special customs procedure like processing in a bonded warehouse. Customs grant the reduction after verifying the documentation; retroactive claims are generally possible only within defined time limits. Crucially, this differs from a deferral: relief permanently reduces the tax liability itself, whereas deferral simply postpones the payment deadline without changing the amount owed.
