Definition & Explanation
Immediate Delivery Entry (IDE) allows goods to be released from a port of entry before the formal customs entry filing is finalized. The importer or a licensed customs broker posts a bond as security and submits the complete entry within the period prescribed by the competent authority. IDE is particularly valuable for perishables, express freight, and time-sensitive supply chains where delays translate directly into cost. It differs from a standard consumption entry, where clearance is fully resolved before goods are released: under IDE, duty liability remains open until the formal entry is lodged and accepted. The procedure is well established under U.S. CBP regulations, with analogous mechanisms existing in other customs regimes under different names.
