An icebreaker is a specialised vessel with a reinforced hull, high propulsion power and a specially shaped bow that cuts channels through ice-covered waters and escorts other ships along them. In freight logistics it is what keeps ports and sea lanes in the Arctic, the Baltic and on large inland waters reachable outside the ice-free months. On the Northern Sea Route along Russia's Arctic coast, icebreaker escort is authorised, mandated and separately charged by the Russian authorities, which feeds directly into freight rates and schedules. For shippers the decisive point is that icebreaker availability co-determines actual departure and arrival times, and that waiting periods can cause substantial delays. An icebreaker should not be confused with an ice class, which describes not the escorting vessel but the structural reinforcement of the cargo ship itself.
