Definition & Explanation

A House Bill of Lading (HBL) is an ocean freight document issued by a freight forwarder or consolidator to the shipper, typically for Less-than-Container-Load (LCL) cargo grouped with other shipments inside a single container. It acknowledges receipt of the goods, establishes the contract of carriage between shipper and forwarder, and – when issued to order – functions as a document of title, allowing ownership of the cargo to be transferred by endorsement. In parallel, the ocean carrier issues a Master Bill of Lading (MBL) to the forwarder as the consolidated shipper; the original shipper has no direct contractual relationship with the carrier and does not appear on the MBL. In letters of credit, confirming banks will only accept an HBL if the credit explicitly authorises it – otherwise a clean MBL is required. The term is fully synonymous with House Bill of Lading across English-language trade documentation.
