Definition & Explanation
Geolocation is the determination and reporting of a geographic position in the form of coordinates. In logistics it is used to locate vehicles, equipment and consignments; in a regulatory context it is increasingly required as proof of a product's origin. The EU Deforestation Regulation, for example, requires latitude and longitude to six decimal places for every plot of production – as a polygon following the plot boundary where the area exceeds four hectares, and as a single point for smaller plots. Without reliable geolocation data, a due diligence statement cannot lawfully be submitted. Geolocation should be distinguished from shipment tracking, which shows only a consignment's current position, and from traceability, which covers a product's entire documented path.
