Definition & Explanation

A flatbed container is an open cargo unit with a solid steel deck but no side walls, end walls, or roof. It is built for cargo that exceeds standard container dimensions in height, width, or length – industrial machinery, structural steel, large pipes, and rolling equipment are typical examples. Cargo is lashed to deck fittings using straps, wire ropes, or specialised clamps. The flat rack variant adds foldable end walls, which simplify stacking when units are returned empty. Because flatbed containers provide no weather protection, sensitive goods must be sheeted or shrink-wrapped. Oversized shipments additionally require special permits from port authorities and coordinated on-board stowage planning.
