First-Party Logistics (1PL) is a logistics model in which a company manages all transport and warehousing activities entirely in-house, using its own staff, vehicles, and facilities. Large manufacturers or retailers with stable, high-volume freight flows typically adopt 1PL when the scale of operations justifies owning dedicated assets outright. Complete visibility and direct control over the supply chain are the primary benefits. The trade-offs are significant fixed costs and limited capacity to flex during demand shifts. By contrast, 2PL involves outsourcing discrete transport legs to carriers, while 3PL delegates the full logistics operation to a specialised third party.
