Definition & Explanation
Banks, freight forwarders, and exporters encounter financial sanctions as a daily compliance reality. Governments and international bodies — including the EU, the UN, and the US Treasury's OFAC — designate specific individuals, companies, or states and impose restrictions on all financial dealings with them. Typical measures include asset freezes, payment prohibitions, and blocked accounts. In international trade, financial sanctions directly affect letters of credit, bank guarantees, and wire transfers: transacting with a designated party can constitute a violation even when the underlying goods are not themselves restricted. Companies and their banking partners are therefore required to screen all counterparties against current sanctions lists before accepting orders or processing payments. Financial sanctions should be distinguished from trade sanctions: the former target the flow of money, the latter the movement of goods.
