Definition & Explanation
Electronic freight documents replace paper originals with legally valid digital equivalents, allowing transport contracts, cargo details, and handover processes to be handled entirely without physical paperwork. In sea freight, the electronic bill of lading (eBL) has emerged as the dominant format; road transport relies on the eCMR consignment note, while air freight uses the electronic air waybill (eAWB). Forwarders and shippers benefit from faster turnaround, as documents can be transmitted instantly and fed directly into customs systems, eliminating the need to courier originals. For letter-of-credit transactions and in-transit title transfers, the eBL offers security through tamper-proof digital signatures. Unlike a simple PDF copy, a properly issued electronic document carries the same legal weight as its paper counterpart.
