In transport, dynamic pricing is the continuous, data-driven adjustment of freight rates to supply, demand, available capacity, fuel costs and market conditions – as opposed to fixed contract tariffs. Freight forwarders and carriers use algorithms that evaluate historical transport data, demand forecasts and current spot rates to calculate prices almost in real time. In practice it improves revenue quality, because scarce capacity is priced higher during demand peaks while weak utilisation is deliberately filled. It requires clean master data and tight integration with dispatching and transport management. It is closely linked to capacity allocation, which assigns the available loading space, and to capacity utilisation, which makes the outcome measurable. For shippers, dynamic pricing means more volatile but more market-based freight rates, making budgeting and tenders more demanding. Not to be confused with static list or contract tariffs, which remain unchanged over a fixed term.
