An online retailer learns from its fulfilment provider that attackers were able to view the names, delivery addresses, phone numbers and order details of its end customers – a textbook data breach. The term covers any incident in which personal or confidential data is accessed, copied, altered or disclosed without authorisation. In logistics this hits precisely the data a contract logistics or 3PL provider processes on behalf of its clients: consignee records, addresses, contact details and item information. Under data protection law the client is normally the controller and the logistics provider the processor; the EU General Data Protection Regulation requires the controller to notify the supervisory authority of a reportable breach within 72 hours as a rule, while the provider must inform the controller without undue delay. It differs from a cyberattack, which describes the cause – the breach is the consequence.
