Dangerous goods are substances or articles that pose a risk to human health, animals, the environment or property due to their chemical or physical properties, and are therefore subject to strict transport regulations. They are internationally classified into nine hazard classes – from explosives (Class 1) and flammable liquids (Class 3) to radioactive materials (Class 7). The applicable rulebook depends on the mode of transport: ADR for road, IMDG for sea, IATA DGR for air freight and RID for rail. Packaging, labelling, shipping documentation and personnel training are tightly prescribed in each regime. Non-compliance can result in shipment holds, fines and liability claims, which is why correct classification must begin with the shipper.
