When transport damage occurs, multiple parties—shipper, carrier, forwarder, or insurer—often share responsibility for the loss. Damage sharing defines, by contract or applicable law, what percentage or quota each party bears of the costs and compensation claims. A typical case: insurer and carrier split liability if investigation shows the damage resulted partly from negligent handling and partly from unforeseeable circumstances. This distributes financial burden fairly rather than placing full liability on one party.
