Carriers and forwarders use freight conversion factors to translate different physical measurements – weight, volume, or piece count – into a single chargeable unit for billing. The most common application is volumetric weight: air cargo typically applies a divisor of 6,000 cm³/kg, while courier services and ocean freight use their own scales. Where calculated volumetric weight exceeds actual gross weight, the higher figure becomes the chargeable weight – protecting carriers from revenue shortfalls on bulky but light shipments such as foam packaging or inflatable goods. Conversion factors are embedded in carrier tariffs and must be disclosed clearly to shippers at the quotation stage. Not to be confused with freight rate conversion, which addresses the recalculation of transport prices across currencies or tariff bases.
