The practical implication is straightforward: two identical 40-ft containers on the same trade lane can carry different total costs depending on terminal conditions at the time of processing. Not to be confused with detention charges, which accrue when a container stays outside the depot beyond its free-time window – irrespective of whether any congestion exists at the terminal.
