Definition & Explanation
In a company acquisition, a buyer takes over the shares or the business of another company and with it control of its fleet, sites, customer contracts and staff. The process separates two moments that news reports often conflate: signing the purchase agreement means the deal is agreed, but it is legally completed only at closing, which may depend on conditions such as competition clearance. In freight forwarding, acquisition is the standard route to gaining network density, cargo volume and traffic rights in a region faster than they could be built organically; for shippers it changes contacts, rate structures and sometimes the routing of the network. Not to be confused with taking goods into charge, which in transport law is the moment the carrier assumes custody of the cargo.
