Class 6 dangerous goods cover two fundamentally different hazard types. Division 6.1 comprises toxic substances capable of causing serious harm or death through inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption—ranging from pesticides to industrial chemicals. Division 6.2 covers infectious substances: Category A biological agents are life-threatening upon exposure and subject to the strictest packaging and refrigeration requirements; Category B carries a lower risk of serious disease but remains fully regulated. ADR (road), IMDG Code (sea), and ICAO TI (air) establish binding classification criteria, approved packaging standards, and mandatory documentation including correct UN numbers and hazard labels. Staff handling Class 6 goods must hold verifiable training in protective equipment, decontamination procedures, and emergency response. Non-compliance can result in shipment refusal, substantial fines, and criminal liability.
