Definition & Explanation
A freight forwarder collects propane cylinders from a client – and Class 2 dangerous goods regulations apply immediately. The class covers all gases that are carried compressed, liquefied, or refrigerated, divided into three divisions: 2.1 (flammable gases such as propane or hydrogen), 2.2 (non-flammable, non-toxic gases such as nitrogen or compressed air), and 2.3 (toxic gases such as chlorine or ammonia). Each division has its own packaging specifications, pressure-vessel inspection intervals, and vehicle ventilation requirements. Air transport imposes strict quantity limits or outright prohibitions for many gases, particularly flammable and toxic ones; sea transport is governed by the IMDG Code with regard to stowage and segregation. Missing pressure-test certificates or incorrect hazard labels will result in the carrier refusing the consignment.
