When a canal authority cuts the number of daily transits, the cause is rarely the canal itself but its watershed. The canal watershed is the entire land area whose rainfall drains through rivers and reservoirs into a shipping canal system and supplies its operating water. In the case of the Panama Canal it feeds, among others, the Gatún and Alhajuela reservoirs, from which every single lockage draws large volumes of fresh water that then flow out to sea. If rainfall in the watershed fails, lake levels drop and the authority has to lower draft limits or cancel transit slots. For freight forwarders and shippers, the canal watershed is therefore an early indicator of capacity, waiting times and surcharges. Not to be confused with a port's catchment area, which describes its geographic customer market.
