The Marne-Rhine Canal (Canal de la Marne au Rhin) is a 314-kilometre inland waterway in eastern France linking the Marne and Rhine river systems. Freight forwarders and barge operators rely on it to move bulk commodities, grain, and chemicals between the Paris region and the Rhine-Ruhr industrial corridor. Westward, the route connects to the Seine and northern seaports; eastward, it feeds into Rhine shipping toward Rotterdam, Duisburg, and Basel. Vessel size is governed by lock dimensions and draught restrictions, with Rhine-Maas-Scheldt-class barges of around 1,350–1,600 tonnes being typical. The canal forms a core segment of the European inland waterway network and is not to be confused with the Rhône–Sète Canal, which links the Rhine axis to the Mediterranean.
