Freight carriers and hauliers choose a box body when cargo must be reliably protected from weather, theft and contamination throughout transit. It is a fully enclosed, rigid vehicle superstructure with a fixed roof, closed side walls and a rear or side aperture for loading and unloading. In European road freight, the box body is the most widely used bodywork type for general cargo, consumer goods, foodstuffs and sensitive goods. Compared with a curtainsider trailer, it offers greater resistance to theft and better thermal insulation; compared with an open flatbed, it provides complete weather protection. Box bodies are available across all vehicle classes – from panel vans to articulated semi-trailers – and can be fitted with refrigeration units to create temperature-controlled reefer box vehicles.
