Definition & Explanation
Bank guarantees in logistics secure payment obligations owed to customs authorities, port operators, warehouse providers, or carriers. The issuing bank commits to paying a predetermined amount to the beneficiary if the logistics service provider fails to fulfil its duties – covering customs duties, port charges, storage fees, or contractual penalties. Without such a guarantee, service providers are often denied access to port infrastructure or regulatory procedures, making it both a security instrument and a prerequisite for market access. The guarantee applies for a defined term and can be renewed as needed. It should not be confused with a letter of credit, which governs payment flows in goods transactions; a bank guarantee, by contrast, covers liability for service obligations.
