An automatic coupling is a mechanical system that joins freight wagons together on contact, without shunting staff having to connect them manually. When two vehicles are pushed together, the mechanism engages, self-locks, and – depending on the design – simultaneously connects brake pipes and electrical conduits. Compared to the screw coupling that has long been standard in Europe, automatic couplings cut shunting times significantly and reduce the risk of personal injury in the yard. The European rail freight sector is actively preparing a large-scale migration to digital automatic coupling (DAC), regarded as a key step toward modernising freight operations and raising network capacity.
