Origin cumulation in free trade agreements allows inputs from multiple contracting parties to be combined into a single qualifying origin. Under the ASEAN–Japan Free Trade Agreement, this means that copper semi-finished products or scrap from any ASEAN member state or Japan may count as originating material, regardless of where final processing takes place. Copper manufacturers can therefore source regionally without forfeiting preferential tariff treatment. The finished product retains originating status as long as the value-addition and processing thresholds set out in the agreement are satisfied.
