A freight forwarder filing a customs entry for its client, or a shipping line's port representative accepting bookings on the carrier's behalf – both are acting as agents. An agent is a person or legal entity appointed by a principal to carry out transport or logistics functions in the principal's name and at the principal's expense. The agent never acquires title to the goods and does not become a party to the contract of carriage; the role is to facilitate, document, and coordinate on behalf of another. In freight transport, the term most commonly applies to customs agents, IATA cargo agents, and general shipping agents. The agent should not be confused with the carrier, who physically performs the transport and bears the corresponding liability.
