Aborted delivery management comes into play at the operational stage of the delivery process whenever a shipment cannot be completed as planned – due to an incorrect address, an unavailable consignee, a blocked access point, or a system failure. Each incident is captured systematically, the root cause analysed, and defined corrective actions triggered: address verification, proactive customer notification, rescheduling, or route adjustment. In parcel and express logistics, the failed delivery rate is a key performance indicator, since every unsuccessful attempt generates direct costs – fuel, driver time, re-sorting – and erodes customer satisfaction. The discipline has grown in importance alongside e-commerce, where high shipment volumes and tight delivery windows increase the frequency of incomplete deliveries. It should not be confused with returns management, which handles planned reverse flows; an aborted delivery is an unplanned disruption within the forward logistics process.
