🇬🇵 Guadelupe

Guadeloupe (ISO GP) is a French overseas department (DOM) and an EU outermost region in the eastern Caribbean, made up of the main islands Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre plus Marie-Galante, Les Saintes and La Desirade. The administrative seat is Basse-Terre, while the economic centre is the Pointe-a-Pitre/Les Abymes area. According to INSEE, the population was about 384,160 on 1 January 2023, with a slight downward trend. For logistics, Guadeloupe is part of the EU customs union but forms its own tax territory: a reduced VAT applies (8.5 percent standard, 2.1 percent reduced) together with the octroi de mer (dock dues), a centuries-old levy on imports and local production. The economy is heavily import-dependent, especially for food, fuel, vehicles and industrial goods, while exports (bananas, rum, sugar) are limited. The main supply hub is the Grand Port Maritime de la Guadeloupe (Guadeloupe Port Caraibes) with its container terminal at Jarry/Baie-Mahault; air freight runs through Guadeloupe - Maryse Conde airport (PTP, formerly Pole Caraibes). The currency is the euro.
