A port's hinterland is the inland catchment area from which the goods shipped through the port originate and to which landed goods are forwarded. It includes industrial sites, mines, power plants, distribution centres and urban areas connected to the port by rail, road, inland waterways or pipelines. The size and economic strength of the hinterland determine a port's cargo volumes; the quality of hinterland connections determines how quickly and cheaply goods reach or leave the port. Where the catchment areas of several ports overlap, they compete for the same cargo.
