Realignment of Import Logistics at Migros Focuses on Specialized Fresh Logistics
The Migros Group is strategically reorganizing its import logistics for fruits and vegetables. Starting in 2028, Buonvicini AG will take over the operational management of this area on behalf of the retailer. The aim is to create a more focused fresh logistics system with clear logistical hubs and optimized transport processes.
At the center of the new structure are two logistical hubs. The existing southern location in Stabio, Ticino will remain part of the network. Additionally, a northern hub will be established at the logistics center in Münchenstein, in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. The location at the tri-border point is considered a key advantage for international import flows and multimodal transport chains.
Perishable goods place particularly high demands on transport, handling, and storage. Cold chain management, rapid transshipment processes, and precise scheduling are central factors for quality and durability. By collaborating with a specialized logistics provider, Migros aims to consolidate and professionalize these processes.
At the same time, existing logistics activities within the Migros Group will be adjusted. The logistics operations of the Migros Basel cooperative are set to be transferred to Migros Aare in Schönbühl in the future. This will create space in Münchenstein for the new import hub. The restructuring of the logistics framework will take place gradually and is expected to be completed by around 2030.
From a logistical perspective, the realignment means a stronger centralization of fresh logistics. At the same time, transport chains can be managed more efficiently, for instance through consolidated import volumes, optimized cross-dock processes, and more precise scheduling along the cold chain.
Time plays a crucial role, particularly in the area of fruits and vegetables. Between harvest, transport, distribution, and sale, there are often only a few days. Therefore, a stable supply chain with quick turnaround times directly influences product quality and availability in retail.
