The EuroAirport was able to reopen its main runway 15/33 earlier than originally planned. After successful technical and safety checks, flight operations on the main runway resumed on May 16, 2026. The initial plan was to restart operations on May 21, 2026. This is an important announcement for the Basel region. The EuroAirport is one of the central transport hubs in the tri-border area and plays a critical role not only for passengers. Companies, airport partners, express services, courier traffic, and time-sensitive logistics all depend on a reliable airport infrastructure. According to EuroAirport, the earlier reopening did not affect the already published flight schedule. Airlines were able to continue their planned offerings. As of May 16, the usual arrival and departure routes are in effect again. This is also relevant for the surrounding communities, as operational procedures have normalized. The renovations involved the main runway as well as taxiway Bravo. The airport justifies the works with the long-term safety and reliability of the infrastructure. Concrete was used for the runway because this material is expected to withstand the high demands of flight operations better over the long term. In parallel with the runway renovation, EuroAirport also took advantage of the reduced operational activity phase to carry out additional works. These included modernizations in terminal areas, parking garages, arrival zones, and in Hall 3 with self-bag drop facilities. Thus, not only was work done on the runway, but also on parts of the passenger and operational infrastructure. The news is particularly interesting for the logistics location Basel because it shows how important planned infrastructure continues to be. Air freight and express logistics rely on speed, but also on stability. When central infrastructures return to normal operation sooner than planned, it reduces uncertainty for airlines, service providers, and companies in the region.
