Germany extends border controls at its national borders until at least September 2026. The border with Switzerland is also affected. For the Basel region, the Basel Weil am Rhein crossing on the A5 is particularly important. The controls at the Swiss border have been in place since October 2023. They were originally introduced due to irregular migration and security concerns. Now they remain in effect. For everyday life, this does not mean that every vehicle will always be checked. However, random checks can occur at any time. This is troublesome for passenger traffic. For logistics, it is primarily a planning issue. When controls are in place on the A5 towards Germany, waiting times can quickly increase. This can become noticeable, especially during peak hours, holiday traffic, or additional truck volumes. For freight forwarders and shippers in Northwestern Switzerland, Basel Weil is one of the most important routes to Germany and further on to France, Benelux, and Northern Europe. When traffic there is delayed, it affects not only individual drivers but also delivery windows, ramp appointments, and connecting transports. It is also important to clarify: The border is not closed. Goods traffic remains possible. It concerns additional checks upon entry into Germany. Nevertheless, dispatchers should not act as if the border is still as easily passable as it once was.
