Frequently asked questions by shippers
How do I calculate transport cost correctly?
Transport cost is made up of the main leg (sea, air, road), pre- and on-carriage, port/airport charges, customs and clearance fees, plus surcharges like bunker adjustment (BAF), currency adjustment (CAF), security (ISPS) and equipment fees. Add insurance premiums, document fees and potential storage. Use the Transport Cost Calculator for a solid baseline and then request quotes through Connect that itemise every line.
Which Incoterm fits my business?
Choice depends on risk sharing, cost control and logistics experience. EXW pushes all duties to the buyer, DAP/DDP to the seller; FCA/FOB/CIF are classic hybrids. Importers who want to steer the chain should pick FCA or FOB (for sea); exporters with limited logistics expertise stay safer with CFR/CIF. Read our Incoterms comparison and pick the term that matches insurability, customs handling and the negotiation power in your contract.
How do I find a reliable forwarder?
Reliable forwarders have clear specialisation (commodity, region, mode), transparent quotes, firm transit commitments, insurance cover and proactive communication. In our Connect network every partner is verified, legally registered and categorised by reputation level. Filter by mode, country, commodity and certification and get multiple binding offers within minutes.
What insurance do I need for my shipment?
All-risks cover (ICC A) protects against nearly everything except explicitly excluded risks; ICC B/C only cover named perils. High-value, fragile or security-critical cargo requires ICC A; bulk shipments often suffice with ICC C. Make sure the policy also includes pre-/on-carriage and trans-shipments. Our Insurance section explains cover, deductibles and how clauses play out when a claim is filed.
How long does my shipment really take?
Transit times depend on mode, port/airport pairing, customs and seasonality. Sea containers Asia → Europe take 30–45 days, air freight 3–7 days, European road 1–5 days. Add pre-/on-carriage and customs clearance (0.5–3 days depending on country and commodity). Our Transit Time Calculator gives realistic end-to-end figures including buffers for customs risk and seasonal peaks.
