That chain of consequences is what vessel rotation describes: the fixed sequence of port calls a liner vessel works through within a service before returning to its starting port. On the Far East–Europe trade a rotation typically covers several Asian loading ports, the canal or Cape passage, and several North European discharge ports, with a full round-trip time of some weeks depending on the service. Carriers deploy enough ships in a service to produce a weekly departure frequency. A delay at a single node – port congestion after a typhoon, for example – therefore propagates through the entire rotation and is often absorbed by skipping a port call (port omission) or cancelling a sailing (blank sailing).
