These items tie up working capital, accumulate ongoing warehousing and handling costs, and carry an elevated risk of write-down or disposal expense. Warehouse and logistics operators must account for such stock separately in capacity planning, as it occupies space without contributing to active order fulfilment. Common resolution strategies include markdowns, supplier returns, liquidation channels, or, as a last resort, destruction. It should not be confused with regular buffer or transit stock, which is drawn down cyclically as part of normal replenishment.
