Unlike a barcode scanner, a UHF RFID reader needs no line of sight to the data carrier and can read multiple tags simultaneously in a single pass. The device emits electromagnetic waves in the 860–960 MHz band, energises passive tags, and retrieves their stored data – typically item codes, container IDs, or shipment identifiers. Read range spans from a few centimetres to several metres depending on antenna design and environmental conditions; metallic surroundings or liquids can reduce range. In freight forwarding and warehouse operations, the reader significantly accelerates goods receipt, stock counts, and dispatch: an entire pallet load is captured in seconds rather than scanning each carton individually. UHF RFID readers are available as fixed gate readers, handheld devices, or systems integrated into conveyor lines.
