Definition & Explanation
A train slot (also called a path or route slot) is the reserved time window for a train to run over a defined section of track at a specific time, allocated by the infrastructure manager to a railway undertaking. It defines when a train may occupy which section of line and forms the basic operational unit of rail timetabling. Rail operators book slots in advance with the infrastructure manager; during capacity bottlenecks or engineering works, booked slots can be cancelled or shifted, which has direct consequences for freight delivery times. Not to be confused with the track access charge, the fee paid for using a slot.
